Many of my clients seek support during pregnancy, which comes with a wide range of physical and emotional manifestations. Below are details of the role I can play in your pregnancy throughout each trimester, during the birth process and beyond.
At this early stage of a pregnancy, my role is primarily one of emotional support, helping moms-to-be adjust their lifestyle, nutrition and exercise habits to suit the growing baby. I also counsel and advise partners to help prepare for the next stages of pregnancy and birth.
During this stage, many expectant moms experience morning sickness and fatigue. As a doula, I will help you address these common symptoms through suggesting remedies, giving emotional support and trustworthy referrals.
In the second trimester, we will discuss classes (birth preparation, feeding, infant care, etc.) and your personal preferences that we may want to incorporate into your birth plan.
This stage is a good time to determine where you would like to have your birth, e.g. a hospital, a birthing center or at home. I will contribute my knowledge and experience to help you finalize your best options, which includes navigating your health insurance. We’ll also research birth classes and determine which are the most appropriate for your situation (birth classes are highly recommended for vaginal birth after cesarean or first time moms). One prenatal appointment can be scheduled at this time.
I can also help you devise an exercise plan after consulting with your health care provider. Outside of the home, the Boulder area has many pregnancy-friendly hiking routes and classes that are suitably paced. See our local resources page to find out more.
As the pregnancy progresses, we can work together on optimal fetal positioning and preparing your body for birth with relaxation and stretching. We have many options in this area! I will provide any necessary referrals for chiropractors, acupuncturists and therapists with your care provider's consent.
At this stage we also make sure the details of the birth itself are mapped out to a reasonable level. From pre-registration at a birth center/hospital to water bath rental for a home birth, my role is to make sure the parent(s)-to-be are prepared. We have 1-2 prenatal appointments in person at this time, with additonal appointments available as needed.
ESTIMATED DUE DATE & POSTPARTUM
I am on call 24 hours a day for you beginning 2 weeks before your estimated due date. I also reserve 2 weeks after your EDD as well. As soon as you call me during labor, I am on hand to support and advocate for you. This can range from physical support & pain managment to monitoring the emotional climate of the birth room and helping you interact with care providers.
The strength of my training and knowledge of the birth process means I can look after the practical details while you and your partner share the birth experience.
Once your baby is born, I fall in step with your family's needs. I offer on call post-partum emotional and logistical support. My fee includes a 2 hour post-partum visit where we remember the birth together with plenty of time to admire your little one and answer questions.
